Baseball Closes Out Series Sweep Over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball closed out a 3-0 sweep over Caltech with a pair of wins over the Beavers Saturday at Alumni Field. 
 
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 22-11 on the season, including 12-6 in SCIAC play.

Landon Hu led the Pomona-Pitzer offense in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with five RBI, going 3-of-3 from the plate with a pair of homers. Kai Gonzaga contributed three RBI while Cooper Berry and Peter Savas each had two. Wade Lawson earned the win from the mound, going 4.1 innings in relief with eight strikeouts. 
 
Caltech got on the board first in the third frame before a Hu solo shot in the bottom of the inning tied things up. The Sagehens then used a five-run fourth inning to break the game open. Hu blasted a three-run shot to right field to fuel the scoring. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer scored its remaining eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Berry homered to start the scoring, before Hu and Savas recorded RBI. Gonzaga then posted a two-run homer before Berry notched an RBI single. Justin Zerger hit an RBI double as the Sagehens led 14-1. The Beavers scored a pair of runs in the seventh but it wasn't enough, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 14-3 run-rule victory.

Jack Gold led the Pomona-Pitzer bats in game three of the series with four RBI on a grand slam. Lateef Wakil posted two RBI on a pair of hits. Lucas Dennis secured the win from the mound, going 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and just two hits. 
 
Tanner DeGrazia tallied an RBI single in the bottom of the first to put the Sagehens on the board first. Berry later posted an RBI double in the fourth and Will Parker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, putting Pomona-Pitzer up 3-0. Pomona-Pitzer added a pair of runs in the fifth before a Wakil two-run homer in the sixth gave the team a 7-0 advantage. 
 
Savas scored on an error later in the sixth. Gold then blasted his grand slam in the same frame, putting the Sagehens up 13-0. Eli Della Bitta recorded a pair of strikeouts in the top of the seventh as Pomona-Pitzer secured the 13-0 run-rule win in seven innings. 
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Cal Lutheran in a three-game series next weekend, first hosting the Kingsmen on Friday, Apr. 24th at 3:00 p.m. PT.
