Softball Takes Game One Over Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehens defeated Occidental College in the first game of the series with final score of a 6-0.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens record is now to 14–18 overall and 7–6 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens produced six runs on nine hits. Kylie Liu led the way, reaching base three times with a home run and two walks while scoring twice. Yuri Song added an RBI and a run scored, while Natalie Murguia contributed a two-RBI performance to pace the middle of the lineup. Claire Sefkow also drove in two runs, and Sadie Huryn scored twice while reaching base multiple times. In the circle, Nyla Springer delivered a dominant complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits over seven innings. She walked two and struck out one to get the victory.

The Sagehens broke through in the third inning when Liu launched a solo home run to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1–0 lead. After several scoreless frames, the Sagehens added to their advantage in the fifth, as Sefkow delivered a two-RBI double to plate Huryn and Liu, extending the lead to 3–0. The Sagehens continued to build momentum in the sixth inning, starting with an RBI triple from Song to make it 4–0. Later in the inning, Natalie Murguia came through with a two-RBI single, driving in Song and Huryn to push the lead to 6–0. From there, the Sagehens' defense held firm, keeping Occidental off the board through all seven innings to secure the shutout victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Occidental again for a double-header on the road. The games will be on Saturday April 18 at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
