Lacrosse Comes From Behind to Defeat CMS in Sixth Street Rivalry Road Game

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team earned a come-from-behind 10-8 Sixth Street Rivalry victory over CMS Saturday afternoon on the road.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season 5-0 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Piper Higgins, who scored four goals on six shots. Caili Cross scored a pair of goals while Maria Favret, Taylor Glanville, Catherine Faucette and Maihue Miranda Wiltberger each posted one.

Glanville opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 11:47 to go in the first quarter. Teams then traded scores, with Miranda Wiltberger, Favret and Cross each scoring off Madeleine Trapp assists to put the Sagehens up 4-2. Higgins added a goal before the Athenas scored three straight just before the half, taking a 6-5 lead at the break.

CMS scored first in the third quarter before Faucette found Higgins for her second goal of the game. The Athenas then added a goal to go up two, 8-6, with 7:51 left in the third. Higgins and the Sagehens refused to go down, though, as Higgins scored a pair within a minute of each other to tie the game at 8-8.

Faucette netted a goal with 1:30 left in the third to put Pomona-Pitzer back in front, 9-8. Cross added an insurance goal with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Sagehens a 10-8 lead. The Pomona-Pitzer defense held strong in the closing minutes, as the Sagehens eventually came away with the 10-8 victory and handed the Athenas their first conference loss of the season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Redlands at Merritt Field on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
