CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse earned a hard-fought 9-8 win over Redlands Wednesday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 6-0 on the season, including 5-0 in SCIAC play.
ZZ Sayeed and
Carly Katzman led Pomona-Pitzer with two goals apiece, with Katzman adding an assist.
Caili Cross and
Piper Higgins each contributed two assists and a goal while
Maria Favret,
Taylor Glanville and
Madelyn Katz each tallied a goal.
The Sagehens found themselves in a 6-2 deficit early in the second quarter, despite goals from Higgins and Sayeed. Sayeed and Favret then traded scores before the half as the team trailed 6-4 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer's defense shut out the Bulldogs in the third quarter, while goals from Katzman and Glanville tied the game, 6-6. Cross then scored early in the fourth quarter off a
Catherine Faucette assist to put the Sagehens on top, 7-6.
But Redlands refused to go down without a fight, as a pair of Bulldog scores put them on top, 8-7, with 9:59 remaining. Katzman responded nearly four minutes later with a goal off a Higgins assist to tie the game back up at 8-8. Katz then scored the go-ahead goal with 4:33 remaining to give the Sagehens a 9-8 lead.
The Bulldogs had three shot attempts in the final minutes but Pomona-Pitzer's defense held strong.
River Buechner caused a turnover and picked up a ground ball with under a minute remaining, as the Sagehens came away with the 9-8 victory.
Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will host Colorado College on Friday, Mar. 13, at 7:00 p.m. PT in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament Round of 32 matchup.
