CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team earned a 22-5 victory over Occidental Saturday on Senior Day.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season 15-15 overall and 9-0 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer had twelve different players
score in the match. The Sagehens were led by
Ayva Magna, who recorded a four-goal haul and scored four for the win.
Kailoa Kerber,
Katie Hugar,
Layla Szymczak,
Brienz Lang,
Sara Archer,
Sophia Berger, and
Ava Gurney each picked up two goals. Also contributing to the win,
Mia Amberger,
Natalie Sullivan Wu,
Lisbon Zeigler, and
Bella McGowan each earned one goal.
Pomona-Pitzer started strong and secured twelve goals in the first half, six in each of the first and second quarters. Magna started the scoring for the match and earned an early goal in the first quarter during a power play with 7:08 left in the period. Lang soon followed with a goal at the 5:33 mark, and Magna then scored one more at the 5:00 mark. Zeigler then scored one with 3:27 left on the clock to put the Sagehens ahead 4-0. While the Tigers managed to break past the Pomona-Pitzer defenses and score, Gurney picked up two back-to-back goals, one during a power play with 1:43 left on the clock and one with 0:08 left in the period. The Sagehens established an early lead and ended the first quarter ahead of Occidental 6-2.
Magna started
the scoring in the second quarter and earned a goal with 5:43 left on the clock. Hugar then scored one with 5:17 left in the period. Lang followed and netted one at the 4:44 mark, and Hugar added one to the Pomona-Pitzer scoring at the 4:09 mark. Archer then found the back of the net during a power play with 3:24 left in the period, and Szymczak earned one with 0:00 left in the quarter. The Sagehens kept their lead as they entered halftime up 12-2.
The Sagehens continued playing well through the second half and secured ten more goals through the third and fourth quarters. McGowan started the scoring in the second half and earned an early goal with 7:16 left in the quarter. Magna then scored a goal at the 5:56 mark, and Amberger secured one at the 5:28 mark. Sullivan Wu also netted one during a power play with 4:04 left on the clock, and Szymczak found one with a player advantage with 3:09 left in the period. The Tigers found another goal, but Kerber soon earned one with 1:50 left in the period. Archer then secured one at the 1:23 mark, and Berger found a penalty goal at the 0:45 mark. Pomona-Pitzer widened
their lead to 20-3 as they entered the final period.
Occidental struck first in the fourth quarter, but Berger responded and earned a penalty goal with 3:18 left in the period. Kerber followed and netted a penalty goal at the 1:45 mark. While the Tigers managed to earn another goal, The Sagehens kept the lead and cemented their 22-5 victory over Occidental.
