LA VERNE, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team secured an 18-6 win over La Verne on Saturday.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season 13-15 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Ayva Magna who picked up four goals and recorded a four-goal haul for the win.
Mia Amberger,
Kailoa Kerber, and
Chloe Mei Espinosa also recorded a multi goal game and each secured two goals, and
Katie Hugar,
Layla Szymczak,
Gabby Lewis,
Lisbon Zeigler,
Rasma Rotsart, and
Lauren Valentin also contributed to the scoring, and each earned one goal.
Pomona-Pitzer fought well in the
to start off the match and earned 11 goals in the first half, eight in the first and three in the second quarter. Magna started scoring for the match and earned an early goal with 7:33 left in the first quarter. Zeigler then earned a goal during a power play at the 6:51 mark, and Magna soon netted another goal at the 5:55 mark. Lang followed suit and earned two goals, one at the 4:29 and the other at the 3:43 mark. Szymczak netted a goal during a power play with 2:10 left on the clock to put the Sagehens ahead 6-0. Kerber then earned a goal at the 1:50 mark, and Lewis followed and scored one at the 1:06 mark. While the Leopards managed to earn one goal, Pomona-Pitzer ended the first quarter with a striking 8-0 lead.
The Leopards struck first in the second quarter, but Amberger soon responded with two goals. Amberger earned an early goal during a power play at the 7:02 mark, and another goal at the 5:35 mark. Mei Espinosa followed and scored a goal with 5:01 left on the clock to put the Sagehens father ahead 11-2. La Verne kept pressuring the Pomona-Pitzer defenses and managed to score on the goal, but the Sagehen lead stood 11-4 as the first half closed out.
Pomona-Pitzer continued playing well through the second half and collected seven more goals through the third and fourth quarters. Hugar started the scoring in the third quarter and earned an early goal with 7:35 left in the period, and Mei Espinosa followed with a goal with 6:49 left on the clock. Magna then netted two-back-to-back goals, one during a power play at the 6:15, and one at the 5:08 mark. Kerber also earned a goal with 3:
20, and Valentin earned one during a power play with 1:01 left on the clock. The Sagehens played well and did not let La Verne score throughout the entire third period, putting Pomona-Pitzer ahead 17-4 as they entered the final quarter of the game.
The Leopards struck first in the fourth quarter, but Rotsart found a goal with 3:18 left on the clock. While La Verne continued pressuring the Sagehen defenses, they could not shift the tide of the match.
Pomona-Pitzer secured their 18-6 victory over the Leopards.
