CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team defeated Pacific University 18-10 on Opening Day Friday at Alumni Field.
Tanner DeGrazia led the Sagehens offensively by hitting for the cycle, going 5-of-6 with five RBI.
Kai Gonzaga had four RBI after going 3-of-3 from the plate while
Greg Pierantoni,
Will Parker,
Sammy Lee and
Peter Savas each posted a pair of hits.
Devin Saltzgaber was credited with the win from the mound after pitching 2.1 innings with one strikeout.
The Boxers took a 3-0 lead in the opening frame before DeGrazia blasted a two-run double to left center in the bottom of the first. The Sagehens then took a 4-3 lead in the second with a Pierantoni RBI single.
Pacific took the lead back briefly with a two-run third inning, but the Sagehens responded in the bottom of the frame with four runs to go up 8-5. Parker belted an RBI double and Gonzaga hit what would have been a grand slam, but was called out after passing a baserunner and therefore credited with a three-RBI single.
Pomona-Pitzer added five runs in the fourth to go up 13-5, with
Jack Gold, DeGrazia, Lee, Savas and
Lateef Wakil notching RBI. DeGrazia and Parker then blasted back-to-back solo shots in the fifth to make it 15-5. Gonzaga hit his second ball over the fence in the eighth to put the Sagehens up 17-10. DeGrazia then put the icing on the cake with an RBI triple off the right center wall, completing the cycle and giving Pomona-Pitzer the 18-10 win.
Up Next: The Sagehens will face the Boxers again tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 7, in a doubleheader at Alumni Field. First pitch for game one is slated for 11:00 a.m. PT.
