CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball defeated Occidental College 69-64 Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The win brings the Sagehens to 9-10 on the season, including 5-6 in SCIAC play.
Kyle Jasper led Pomona-Pitzer offensively with 18 points and three assists while
Charlie Hutchison had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Charlie Treene contributed 12 points and
Sam Lind posted eight points with four rebounds.
Teams traded baskets to start the contest, with
Matthew Diekmann hitting a midrange jumper to bring the Sagehens within a point, 14-13.
Reagan Cornish and Jasper then traded threes and Hutchison scored in the paint. Bladow hit a three of his own before Jasper knocked down two more before the end of the half, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 32-30 lead at the break.
Hutchison stretched the Sagehens' lead to six, 38-32, with a pair of free throws three minutes into the second half. Treene then hit a trey and hammered home a fast break dunk. Treene hit another triple and
Cooper Bladow and
Bryson Bryker traded baskets in the paint. Cornish then nailed a jumper of his own to give Pomona-Pitzer its largest lead of the night, 53-41, with 11:02 remaining.
The Sagehens managed to maintain a comfortable lead, with a Diekmann fast break dunk giving them a 61-50 lead with 6:59 to go. The Tigers hit a three to make it a four-point game, 63-59, with 2:35 left before Jasper knocked down a long two-pointer. The Sagehens' defense held Occidental to just one more basket down the stretch, and Jasper hit four free throws as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 69-64 win.
