LOS ANGELES — The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team overwhelmed Occidental with a 23–2 victory on Saturday.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season at 5-8 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Kailoa Kerber and
Sara Archer, who each earned a four-goal haul by netting four goals for the win.
Ava Gurney and
Rasma Rotsart also earned a hat trick by scoring three goals and
Katie Hugar netted two. Also contributing to the win were
Natalie Sullivan Wu,
Lisbon Zeigler,
Paityn Richardson,
Sydney Bowns,
Bella McGowan,
Sophia Berger, and
Emma Jackson who each scored one.
Pomona-Pitzer started strong against Occidental with fourteen goals in the first half, scoring seven in the first and seven in the second period. The Sagehens started the scoring for this match with Hugar finding the back of the net with 6:54 left on the clock. Richardson and Zeigler followed by earning goals with 6:08 and 4:49 left on the clock. Sullivan Wu then managed to secure one with a player advantage to bring Pomona-Pitzer leading 4-0. While the Tigers broke through the Sagehen defenses, Berger swiftly replied by netting a goal with 2:45 left on the clock. Kerber and McGowan soon furthered the Pomona-Pitzer campaign with last minute goals with 2:12 and 1:28 left on the clock. The Sagehens closed out the first period with a 7-1 lead over Occidental. Pomona-Pitzer continued their series of coordinated offensive maneuvers through the end of the first half. Bowns and Hugar started the scoring in the second period by earning a goal with 7:06 and 5:22 left on the clock, respectively. Kerber then followed with three back-to-back goals with 4:24, 3:52, and 3:28 left on the clock. Archer then followed with a series of two back-to-back goals with 2:27 and 1:18 left on the clock to further the Sagehen lead. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime ahead of the Tigers 14-1.
The Sagehens kept pressuring the opposing defenses as they secured nine more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Archer started the scoring in the third quarter with two back-to-back goals with 6:46 and 6:06 left on the clock. Gurney and Rotsart soon followed by netting goals with 4:43 and 3:41 left on the clock. While Occidental managed to break through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses, Rotsart replied with two back-to-back goals, one with 3:00 and one on a powerplay with 1:44 left on the clock. The Sagehens entered the final quarter ahead of Occidental 20-2.
Gurney started the scoring in the final period and earned a goal with 7:10 left on the clock. Jackson followed suit and scored a goal with 5:04 left on the clock. Gurney then earned a last-minute goal with 1:17 left on the clock to widen the Pomona-Pitzer heading. The Sagehens overwhelmed Occidental and secured a noteworthy 23-2 victory.
