Baseball Earns Series Win Over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team secured a 2-1 series victory over Chapman after splitting its doubleheader with the Panthers Saturday.

Sagehens 12, Chapman 10

Pomona-Pitzer secured the series win over the Panthers with a two-run victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Greg Pierantoni posted a team-high six RBI after going a perfect 5-of-5 from the plate. Sammy Lee contributed three RBI while James Quintero had two and Jack Gold added one.

Wade Lawson (1-0) was credited with the win from the mound after striking out a batter in 2.0 IP. Devin Saltzgaber earned the save, recording a strikeout after pitching the ninth inning. Will Polishuk got the start and went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Talen Pilz also tallied three strikeouts in 1.2 IP.

The Sagehens jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening frame, with Pierantoni and Lee posting three RBI apiece and Quintero adding another. Chapman, though, clawed its way back to within a run, 7-6, by the fifth inning.

Pomona-Pitzer tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, with Pierantoni hitting a sac fly and Gold tallying an RBI single. The Panthers added two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame before a Quintero sac fly in the seventh made it 10-8 Sagehens. Chapman then tied the game at 10 with a pair of runs in the eighth.

But Pierantoni came through yet again for Pomona-Pitzer in the ninth, driving in Peter Savas and Will Parker on a single to left field. The Sagehens held on for the 12-10 victory.

Sagehens 3, Chapman 4

Kai Gonzaga and Quintero tallied one RBI each to lead the Pomona-Pitzer offense in the final game of the three-game series with the Panthers. Lucas Dennis got the start on the mound and struck out six batters in 4.2 IP. Devin Saltzgaber also fanned six batters in 3.1 innings of relief.

Chapman scored the game's first three runs in the top of the first before the Sagehens responded with two in the second. Quintero drove in Savas on a single to right center before Gonzaga sent Brody Ruyle home on a double to left center. Tanner DeGrazia then scored in the third inning after Cooper Berry was caught stealing second, tying the game 3-3.

Neither team managed to score from then on until the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded, the Panthers walked the game off on a wild pitch to win 4-3.
