Claremont, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball defeated Sixth Street Rival CMS 54-45 at home on senior night. The Sagehens are currently tied with Redlands for third place in the SCIAC standings.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 13-7 on the season, including 10-4 in SCIAC play.
Emily Lee and Jadyn Lee led the way with 13 points apiece, as Jadyn added five rebounds and three assists while Emily tallied four steals. Sofia Robel chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Kayla Malek controlled the glass with seven boards to help the Sagehens to a 54-point effort.
CMS struck first with an early layup, but Anna Revill answered in the paint before Sara Chicco drilled a three off a J. Lee assist to give the Sagehens a 5-2 edge. After trading baskets, the Sagehens built a 13-8 lead behind buckets from Robel, J. Lee, and Malek, controlling the paint midway through the quarter. CMS responded late with back-to-back threes to flip the lead, and despite a strong drive from Jadyn Lee, the Athenas closed the quarter on a run to take an 18-15 advantage into the break. CMS pushed its lead to six early in the second quarter, but E. Lee knocked down a three off a Shea Joko assist to keep the Sagehens within striking distance. After CMS stretched the margin to seven, Robel sparked the response with a tip-in and midrange jumper, trimming the deficit to two late. J. Lee delivered the biggest shot of the period, burying a go-ahead three with 29 seconds left off a Homan assist to give the Sagehens a 26-25 edge heading into halftime.
E. Lee answered an early CMS bucket with a layup and later drilled a game-tying three to knot the score at 31-31 midway through the third quarter. CMS briefly regained the edge, yet Homan finished inside to tie it again at 33 before E. Lee converted another layup in the final seconds. The teams went into the fourth quarter deadlocked at 35-35. The Sagehens seized control early in the fourth, opening on a 6-0 run to build a 41-35 advantage. After CMS trimmed the margin to three, the Sagehens answered at the line and from deep, as Homan buried a three and Robel knocked down two free throws to stretch the lead to nine. The Sagehens closed it out at the stripe to secure the 54-45 victory.
