Baseball Secures Series Win Over Whitworth

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball split Saturday's doubleheader with Whitworth, falling 7-4 before prevailing 12-7, to secure the three-game series win over the Pirates, 2-1. 
 
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 5-1 on the season, including two three-game series wins.

Cooper Berry led the team offensively in the first game Saturday with two RBI, while Tanner DeGrazia and Kai Gonzaga each added one. Will Polishuk went 7.0 innings on the mound, striking out seven while giving up six hits and four runs. Lincoln Oelschlager (0-1) was credited with the loss after pitching 1.0 innings in relief with one strikeout. 
 
Whitworth got on the board first with a pair of homers in the opening frame, leading 3-0. Gonzaga answered with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the inning. DeGrazia then hit an RBI double in the third and Berry launched a two-run shot in the fourth, giving the Sagehens a 4-3 advantage. 
 
In a game that was predetermined to go seven innings, the Pirates extended things by tying the game at 4-4 in the top of the frame. Whitworth then scored three runs in the eighth, eventually holding on for the 7-4 win.

Sammy Lee posted four RBI in the deciding game three of the series, while Berry, Will Parker and Gonzaga each added two. Lucas Dennis got the start on the bump and went 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Devin Saltzgaber earned the win after going 3.0 innings with a pair of punchouts. 
 
The Sagehen offense exploded to start the game, scoring seven in the first two frames. DeGrazia and Parker traded RBI in the first inning. Gonzaga then blasted a two-run shot in the second, before Berry and Lee traded RBI singles to make it 7-0. 
 
The Pirates got a run back in the third before Parker notched an RBI single and Lee added a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Lee then scored on an error to make it 11-0 Pomona-Pitzer. Whitworth scored five unanswered to make it 11-6 in the sixth before Lee hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Pirates scored one more run in the seventh but the Sagehens came away with the 12-7 win in another game predetermined to go seven innings. 
 
Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will take on Kalamazoo College tomorrow, Sunday. Feb. 15, at 9:30 a.m. PT.
