Sagehens Fall to SDSU, CMS at Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team suffered two losses on the second day of the Triton Invitational tournament as they fell to SDSU 12-9 and fell to CMS 10-5.

Season Impact: With the two losses, the Sagehens continue their season 0-5 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 9, SDSU 12

The Sagehens were led by Brienz Lang, who earned a hat trick by scoring three goals throughout the game. Mia Amberger, Ayva Magna, Lisbon Zeigler, Gabby Lewis, Paityn Richardson, and Chloe Mei Espinosa each netted one. Pomona-Pitzer started strong against San Diego with 4 first half goals, scoring six in the first half. SDSU established an early lead, but as the Sagehens pushed to turn the tide, they fell short of their goal and were unable to convert throughout the first period. They concluded the first quarter behind 0-3.

The scoring traded off between the teams in the second period. Notably, Lewis secured the first goal for Pomona-Pitzer with 6:21 left on the clock. Espinosa followed her lead by finding the back of the net with 5:49 left on the clock. The Sagehens furthered their campaign, despite pressure from San Diego, with Zeigler and Amberger who scored goals with 2:46 and a buzzer-beating 0:02 left on the clock, respectively. With a strong series of swift maneuvers, the Pomona-Pitzer made themselves known in the second period of the match and entered halftime trailing behind SDSU 4-7.

The Sagehens continued to play well into the second half and secured five more goals in the third and fourth quarters. The opposing team scored first in the half, but Magna netted a goal on a powerplay with 4:06 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens behind 5- 8. Lang then secured a goal from a penalty shot with 1:44 left on the clock in an effort to narrow the score gap. Richardson abetted the campaign by denting the twine with 0:57 left on the clock. The strong efforts from Pomona-Pitzer left them just trailing behind San Diego 7-8 as they entered the final period.

The Sagehens maintained their momentum in the fourth quarter. Lang found the back of the net off of a penalty shot with 7:42 left on the clock to tie the score 8-8. However, SDSU persisted to break past the Pomona-Pitzer defenses and swiftly reclaimed their lead. In an effort to stay in the game, Lang scored a goal with 1:06 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens behind 9-11. SDSU maintained its lead and Pomona-Pitzer fell to San Diego in their second game of the Triton Invitational.

Pomona-Pitzer 5, CMS 10

The Sagehens were led by Brienz Lang, who earned a hattrick by netting three goals throughout the game. Mia Amberger and Lisbon Zeigler each scored one. Pomona-Pitzer gained a good start in the first half and secured four goals in the first and second quarters. Lang started the scoring for the game and netted a goal with 5:17 left on the clock. The scoring traded off between the two teams. Notably, Lang secured another goal on a powerplay with 1:55 left on the clock. Due to a strong effort from both sides, Pomona-Pitzer found themselves tied with CMS 2-2 as the first period concluded.

Both sides brought an electric energy to the second period and were unable to gain an edge over their opposition. However, Lang managed to secure a penalty goal with 4:01 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens up 3-2. While the Athenas did breach the Pomona-Pitzer defenses, Amberger swiftly responded by scoring a goal on a powerplay with 0:36 left on the clock. Thanks to a strong effort on all sides, the Sagehens led the game as they concluded the first half up 4-3.

The Athenas struck first in the second half. However, Zeigler scored a goal with 2:05 left on the clock to revive the Pomona-Pitzer lead. Still, CMS broke through the Sagehen defensive lines and tied the score 5-5 as the third quarter concluded. CMS ramped up their defenses in the fourth quarter and despite strong offensive efforts from the Sagehens, they were unable to convert. The Athenas broke past the Sagehen defenses and obtained an overwhelming lead. Pomona-Pitzer concluded their second game of the day and third game of the Triton Invitational with a 10-5 loss to CMS.
