LA JOLLA, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team concluded its run at the Triton Invitational tournament with an 11-9 win over UCSB.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season at 1-5 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Sydney Bowns, who secured a four-goal haul in the game.
Mia Amberger and
Chloe Mei Espinosa also had a multigoal game and each netted three, while
Paityn Richardson scored one.
Pomona-Pitzer started strong against UCSB with nine first half goals, scoring two in the first and seven in the second quarter. The Gauchos established an early lead, but Espinosa then responded by scoring two goals, one on a powerplay with 2:20 left on the clock and one with even strength with 1:23 left on the clock. The Sagehens closed out the first quarter with a tied 2-2 score. Amberger started the scoring in the second quarter and found the back of the net with 5:16 left on the clock. Bowns followed suit and secured an impressive three more goals for the Sagehens, with Amberger and Espinosa each picking up another through the end of the period. Pomona-Pitzer established an overwhelming 9-3 lead entering halftime.
The Sagehens continued to play well into the second half and secured two more goals in the third and fourth quarters. UCSB attempted to play catch-up but still could not find their edge over Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens maintained their lead 9-4 as the match entered its final period.
Despite the Gauchos' efforts, Pomona-Pitzer persisted in protecting their lead going into the fourth quarter. While UCSB did break through the Sagehen defenses, Richardson responded by securing a goal on a powerplay with 5:14 left on the clock to keep Pomona-Pitzer ahead 10-6. Amberger followed suit and secured a goal on a powerplay with 2:40 left on the clock amid the UCSB siege. Thanks to a strong effort on all fronts, Pomona-Pitzer secured a 11-9 win over UCSB in its final game of the Triton Invitational tournament.
