Joko Calls Game In Sixth Street Win Over CMS

CLAREMONT, CA. – Pomona-Pitzer's Shea Joko cemented herself in the Sixth Street Rivalry history books with her last-second three to give the Sagehens a 66-65 win over CMS on Saturday night at Roberts Pavilion.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improved to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in SCIAC play while handing CMS their first conference loss of the season.

A very entertaining contest between the two SCIAC rivals with the Sagehens holding the advantage shooting from the field at 42.2% and an incredible night from three hitting on 8-15 for 53.3%.  Five Sagehens reached double-digit scoring numbers with Emily Lee leading the way at 14, Abigail Homan at 11 and Jadyn Lee, Shea Joko, and Avery Patricco all with 10.

CMS scored the opening basket of the game but early points from Homan, Lee and Patricco put the Sagehens up 11-6 midway through the first. CMS immediately answered with the biggest run of the game at 12-2 to take an 18-13 advantage, but the Sagehens closed the gap 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams played as even as you could in the second quarter. Once, the Sagehens regained the lead at 22-21, the lead changed hands 10 times in the second and ended with CMS taking a 37-35 lead after a made three to put the Athenas up by two heading into halftime.

The third quarter was a turning point for the Sagehens where they outscored CMS 24-20. The Sagehens hit on 50% of their shots in the third (9-18) including hitting on 4-6 three's for their game high scoring quarter. Pomona-Pitzer started the third trailing 40-35 and sparked a run to take a 46-43 lead after an Emily Lee three with 7:21 to play in the third.  CMS battled back late in the third as the lead changed hands multiple times, but the Sagehens ended with a Joko three at the end of the third to take a 59-57 lead into the fourth.

After a third quarter that saw 44 combined points, the fourth only had 15 between the two teams but twice the amount of drama. Fast forwarding to the final two minutes with CMS leading 64-63, the Sagehens' offense went cold late in the game and went scoreless for three minutes and thirty-six seconds late in the fourth quarter. The Sagehens had multiple possessions to take the lead but committed two turnovers in key possessions and were forced to foul to send CMS to the free-throw line. The Athenas only converted one of their two chances from the stripe to keep the game within striking distance as the Sagehens had to go with no timeouts, trailing 65-63 with six seconds on the clock.  Joko gets the ball off the inbound and darts straight to the top of the arc to send in a Sixth Street dagger at the buzzer to give the Sagehens the win over CMS.

Up Next: The Sagehens will return home to host Caltech on Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m.
