CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball pulled away late to defeat Cal Lutheran 62-59 Wednesday night on the road.
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' season record to 7-9, including 3-5 in SCIAC play.
Kyle Jasper led Pomona-Pitzer with 18 points, going 5-of-11 from deep, to go with three assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Charlie Hutchison followed with 11 points and seven rebounds while
Matthew Diekmann and
Connor Fitzgerald each scored eight.
Cal Lutheran controlled the first half, taking a 22-17 lead before Diekmann scored a fast break layup. Jasper hit a three-pointer with 1:20 left in the period but the Kingsmen carried a 29-22 advantage into the locker room.
The Kingsmen pushed their lead to nine, 34-25, early in the second half before the Sagehens surged on a 14-1 run to take a 39-35 lead. Fitzgerald hit a three and Jasper added two treys of his own to seal the run.
Reagan Cornish added a three of his own as Pomona-Pitzer led 47-44 midway through the second half.
Another Cornish triple gave the Sagehens an eight-point advantage, 52-44, with 8:24 to go. Cal Lutheran, though, tied the game at 55 with 3:15 left and took a 57-55 lead with 2:17 to go. But
Charlie Treene responded with a clutch three-pointer with 1:28 remaining to put the Sagehens back on top, 58-57. Jasper then posted a steal and a fast break lay-in to give Pomona-Pitzer a 60-57 lead with 1:18 to go. Jasper and Hutchison each hit a free throw down the stretch and the Sagehen defense held strong, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 62-59 win.
