CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball defeated La Verne 80-72 Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 6-8 on the season, including 2-4 in SCIAC play.
Charlie Hutchison led the Sagehens with 17 points and 12 rebounds while
Matthew Diekmann added 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-3 from deep.
Kyle Jasper scored 13 while
Samir O'Brien had 11 and
Connor Fitzgerald contributed 10 points.
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a quick start, leading 22-13 after an and-one from Hutchison. Diekmann later hit a three to make it 31-18 Sagehens and Jasper added one of his own with 5:06 left in the first half. Pomona-Pitzer led 46-34 at the break after a basket in the paint from Fitzgerald.
La Verne fought back to make it a one-point game, 58-57, midway through the second half. But a Jasper three later brought Pomona-Pitzer's lead back up to seven, 66-59. The Sagehens managed to keep the Leopards at bay down the stretch, with Hutchison and Fitzgerald knocking down a pair of free throws each to give the Sagehens an 80-72 victory.
