LA VERNE, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell to No. 1 ranked La Verne in four sets (21-25, 16-25, 26-24, 20-25) Saturday evening on the road.
Season Impact: The result puts the Sagehens at 6-6 on the season, including 1-1 in SCIAC play.
Paige Mountanos posted 14 kills on the night, followed by
Anna Krebs who had 13 and
Samantha Grabb who tallied 12.
Corrina Benson notched 28 digs to lead the defense while
Sophie Mies dished out 21 assists.
The Sagehens hung around for most of set one, with a
Natalie Potter kill and a La Verne attack error giving the team a 20-19 lead. A
Tene Ariyo kill then tied things at 21-21. But the Leopards scored the final four points of the set, taking it 25-21. Despite a late pair of kills from Krebs in the second, La Verne won set two, 25-16, to go up 2-0 in the match.
Pomona-Pitzer fought from behind in set three, trailing 16-11 before using a 6-1 run to tie the set, 17-17. La Verne scored the next five but the Sagehens refused to go down easily, as another 6-1 run tied it at 23-23. The Leopards scored next to push it to match point, but a pair of Krebs kill and a block from Potter and
Nayla Ward gave Pomona-Pitzer set three, 26-24.
Another pair of Krebs kills midway through the fourth brought the Sagehens within one, 13-12.
Hanna Chen recorded a service ace late, but La Verne closed the match out with a 25-20 set four win.
