CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's soccer defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: The win propels the Sagehens' season record to 6-0-2, including 2-0-1 in SCIAC play.
In a physical match that saw five yellow cards and 18 fouls, the Sagehens prevailed over the Stags thanks to a first-half goal from
Colin Eugster and a game-winning score in the 79th minute from
Seb Lee Jara. Pomona-Pitzer capitalized on its opportunities, scoring twice on five shots while holding CMS to a single goal despite the Stags rattling off 12 shots.
Jasper Broad tallied four saves in goal.
After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes, the Sagehens broke through in the 33rd with Eugster scoring his first goal of the season.
Niclas Ulrich drove a ball in from near midfield that found
Alex Greenstein who then set up Eugster with a one-touch cross. Eugster blasted it home for the finish, as the Sagehens held a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Stags answered just three minutes into the second half with a goal to tie things up at 1-1. It took another 30 back-and-forth minutes before Pomona-Pitzer reclaimed its lead.
Chris Chow dribbled the ball from the Sagehens' defensive half and passed it over the top of the Stag defense to a streaking Lee Jara. Lee Jara managed to chip the ball over a charging CMS keeper, then watched it roll into the back of the net to give the Sagehens the 2-1 advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer's defense held strong through the final 10 minutes, as the Sagehens came away with the 2-1 victory at home.
Up Next: The Sagehens will remain home to take on Caltech this Saturday, Sept. 27, at 11:00 a.m. PT.
