PROVIDENCE, RI – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team secured a pair of wins on its final day at the Bruno Invite with a 9-8 win over Johns Hopkins and a 17-10 victory over MIT Sunday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improved to 5-6 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer 9, Johns Hopkins 8
The Sagehens were led by Jaden Winters who netted a hat trick with three goals. Chase Barman and Nico Perna also had a multigoal game with two and Jake Lee and Darragh Flanders had one each.
Pomona-Pitzer started off strong against Johns Hopkins with three first half goals, scoring one goal in the first and two in the second quarter. The Blue Jays struck first and left the Sagehens trailing 2-0. Nico Perna then netted a goal with 5:29 left on the clock in the first quarter and set the score to 2-1. In the second quarter, Barman scored first and Flanders followed suit with another goal for Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens entered halftime down to Johns Hopkins 5-3.
The Sagehens secured six more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Perna managed to net another goal as the Sagehens finished the third quarter trailing 6-4.
Pomona-Pitzer scored four goals to start the fourth from Barman, Winters, and Lee with Winters scoring two, putting Pomona-Pitzer ahead 8-6. While John Hopkins came back within a goal, 8-7, Winters scored another goal with 1:04 left on the clock, his third of the quarter. The Blue Jays scored again with 52 seconds and had a chance to tie the game with a penalty shot but missed, as the Sagehens came away with the 9-8 win.
Pomona-Pitzer 17, MIT 10
The Sagehens were led by Indigo Lee against MIT who netted four goals throughout the game. John Shafer, Jake Lee, Nico Perna, Darragh Flanders, and Jaden Winters each also had a multigoal game with two goals each while Chase Barman, Conrad Hugar, and Emerson LaPorta each netted one.
Pomona-Pitzer took the lead early with 8 first half goals including five in the first and three in the second quarter. Hugar started the scoring by denting the twine with 7:38 left on the clock. Indigo Lee continued the momentum with two goals and more goals netted from Flanders and Jake Lee in the first quarter, which set the Sagehens leading 5-3. Pomona-Pitzer continued to break through the Engineer defense in the second quarter with Lee, Perna, and Winters all netting goals. The Sagehens entered halftime with an 8-5 lead.
The Sagehens powered through the second half and managed to secure nine goals in the third and fourth quarters. Flanders started the scoring in the second half with Lee, Perna, and LaPorta following with four more goals for the Sagehens. The quarter concluded with Pomona-Pitzer still ahead 12-8.
Pomona-Pitzer continued playing hard through the end of the game and finished with five more goals. Lee, Winters, and Barman each scored a goal with Schafer scoring back-to-back goals one with 0:11 left on the clock. The Sagehens closed out the final day of the Bruno Invite strong with a record of 3-1 over the two-day event.
