LEXINGTON, Ky. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball defeated Muskingum University in four sets and Maryville College in three Friday on the campus of Transylvania University.
Season Impact: The wins propel the Sagehens to 5-4 on the season.
Sagehens 3, Muskingum 1 (25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23)
Tene Ariyo guided Pomona-Pitzer past the Muskies with 21 kills on a .391 clip while
Paige Mountanos added 13 of her own.
Corrina Benson notched a double-double with 22 digs and 10 assists while
Savanna Cespedes also had a double-double, securing 15 digs with 12 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer pulled away midway through the first set, with a
Samantha Grabb kill making it 18-10. Back-to-back kills from
Charlotte Sekerka and Mountanos gave the Sagehens set one, 25-18. The Sagehens then pushed the match to the brink with a close set two win, as Ariyo notched a kill and
Natalie Potter recorded an ace to take the set, 25-22.
Muskingum fought back in the third to prevent the sweep, taking game three 25-20. But the Sagehens closed the match in a back-and-forth set four. Trailing 23-22, a trio of kills from Ariyo gave Pomona-Pitzer the 25-23 set three win and the match, 3-1.
Sagehens 3, Maryville 0 (25-22, 25-15, 32-30)
Mountanos paced the Sagehens against the Saints with 15 kills on a .417 hitting percentage, while
Ella Mesard followed with eight kills and five digs. Benson had a team-best 11 digs and Cespedes dished out a team-high 16 assists.
Mackenzie Bravo Woo closed a 3-0 Sagehen run to win set one with an ace to put the team up 1-0 in the match. Pomona-Pitzer then dominated the second set, using a 7-0 run midway through to take a commanding 19-13 lead. A kill from Mesard and two from Grabb closed the Sagehens' 25-15 set two win.
The third set came down to the wire, with the Sagehens ultimately outlasting Maryville for the 32-30 set win and 3-0 match win. Trailing 30-29, Bravo Woo tallied a kill,
CC Porter notched an ace and Maryville had an attack error to give Pomona-Pitzer the victory.
