Sagehens Battle To 2-2 Draw In Match With Redlands

REDLANDS, CA - The Sagehens battled in a physical 2-2 draw with Redlands on Saturday evening in Redlands.

Season Impact: With the result, the Sagehens move to 4-0-1 overall.

The Sagehens struck first after applying early pressure in the box. At the 21st minute, defender Niclas Ulrich  converted a penalty kick to the bottom right corner, giving the Sagehens the 1-0 lead. Just moments earlier, the Sagehens had been active on set pieces, with Jack Yang delivering multiple corner kicks and Chris Chow nearly finding the net with a strong header at the 17' mark, forcing a save from Redlands goalkeeper Brady Bachman. Goalkeeper Jasper Broad was tested early as well, coming up with saves on shots by the Bulldogs, keeping the Sagehens in front. Redlands, however, equalized in the 32nd minute leveling the match at 1-1. The Bulldogs continued to push forward, but Broad and the Sagehens' back line held firm to prevent a go-ahead goal. As halftime approached, the match's intensity ramped up, with fouls piling up on both sides and Redlands picking up a yellow card just before the whistle. The two teams entered the break knotted at 1-1.

The second half opened with Redlands on the attack, forcing Broad into multiple saves, including a diving stop on a header in the 49th minute. The Sagehens broke through in the 77th minute when freshman Seb Lee Jara scored his first collegiate goal and capitalized on a misplayed Redlands throw-in, slotting the ball off the right post and in to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead. However, the advantage was short-lived. Just a minute later, Redlands drew a penalty, and converted from the spot to even the score at 2-2. The Sagehens continued to push forward with late chances from Andy Xiao and Kieran Veloria, but fell short. Neither side could find a late winner, and the match ended 2-2.

Up Next: The Sagehens open up SCIAC conference play at home against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday Sept. 17th at 4:00pm.
