CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball defeated Buffalo State 3-0 before falling to St. Olaf 3-0 Saturday on the second and final day of the Pacific Coast Classic.
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 2-1 on the 2025 season.
Sagehens 3, Buffalo State 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21)
Tene Ariyo and
Paige Mountanos led Pomona-Pitzer with 10 kills apiece against the Bengals, with Ariyo posting a team-best .381 hitting percentage.
Corrina Benson notched a team-high 22 digs while
Paige Butler dished out a team-best 15 assists.
The Sagehens cruised to an opening 25-18 set one win, fueled by a 4-0 run late in the frame.
Natalie Potter tallied a kill before a Bengal attack error sealed set one. A 5-1 run midway through set two put Pomona-Pitzer up 20-13.
Charlotte Sekerka and Ariyo posted kills down the stretch as the Sagehens went up 2-0 in the match.
Pomona-Pitzer kept its foot on the gas in set three, with a pair of Ariyo kills making it 23-16. Mounatnos eventually sealed the set win with a kill of her own.
Sagehens 0, St. Olaf 3 (20-25, 22-25, 23-25)
Ariyo and
Samantha Grabb led Pomona-Pitzer with 11 kills in its three-set loss to St. Olaf, with Grabb hitting at .588. Benson posted a team-high 16 digs while
Savanna Cespedes had a team-best 17 assists.
Pomona-Pitzer fought from behind for much of the first set, with kills from Mountanos and Grabb making it 20-16 for St. Olaf. Mountanos notched another kill late but St. Olaf took the set, 25-20. Trailing 23-18 in the second, a 3-0 Sagehen run fueled by a pair of Mountanos kills made it 23-21. But St. Olaf went on to hang on, 25-22.
In the third, an Ariyo kill set up by Cespedes put the Sagehens up three, 18-15. A Grabb kill later made it 20-19 before St. Olaf scored four straight. Pomona-Pitzer answered with three straight points of their own, but St. Olaf scored the game's final two points to take the match, 3-0.
Benson tallied her 1,000th career dig in the match.
