Baseball Opens SCIAC Tournament with Loss to CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. — No. 2 seed Pomona-Pitzer baseball fell 12-10 to No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in its opening game of the 2025 SCIAC Tournament at home Thursday afternoon.

Season Impact: The Sagehens will now host No. 4 seed Redlands tomorrow in an elimination game. The loss puts the team at 27-14 on the season.

Cooper Berry led Pomona-Pitzer with five RBI after going 3-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Jack Gold, Tanner DeGrazia, Xavier Hattenburg and Carson Evans each posted one RBI on the game. Ethan Collins struck out four batters after starting on the mound while Wade Lawson was credited with the loss.

The Sagehens jumped out in front early, with Berry driving home Gold in the first inning to put the team up 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer then added a six-spot in the fourth fueled by Berry's grand slam to right field to go up 7-0.

The Stags, though, started to claw their way back with a six-spot of their own in the fifth inning. CMS then took the lead in the sixth, 8-7, after adding a pair of runs in the frame. The Stags scored one more in the seventh and two more in the eighth to go up 12-7.

DeGrazia and the Sagehens refused to go down without a fight, as the junior drove in Greg Pierantoni with a double to center field in the bottom of the eighth. Hattenburg and Evans each posted groundout RBI in the same frame, as Pomona-Pitzer cut its deficit to two, 12-10. But the Stag defense held strong in the final frame, as CMS held on for the 12-10 win.

Up Next: The Sagehens will face No. 4 seed Redlands in an elimination game tomorrow, Friday, May 9, at Alumni Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. PT.
