CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Final Four with a 4-0 national quarterfinals win over Wesleyan University Tuesday at CMS.
Season Impact: The win advances the Sagehens to the Final Four, where they will face Emory University tomorrow, Wednesday, May 21st, at noon PT. Pomona-Pitzer is now 16-7 overall on the year.
The Sagehens earned the doubles point to start the day, with
Lauren Rha and
Leticia Bazua Vazquez taking down their opponents first on court three, 6-3.
Nyakiriri Kanefu and
Amelia Poor then won their match on court two, 6-4, to secure the doubles point and take an overall 1-0 match lead.
Poor continued her dominance in singles in the No. 5 matchup, taking down her opponent 6-3, 6-2 to secure the first singles point and put the Sagehens up 2-0 in the match.
Marissa Markey then won convincingly on court No. 4, 6-2, 6-4.
Angie Zhou then secured the match win for the Sagehens on top court, despite falling behind 5-1 early. Zhou fought all the way back to win the first set 7-6 (9-7), before cruising to a dominant 6-0 win in the second to win her matchup and give Pomona-Pitzer the 4-0 match win.
Rha and Kanefu were leading their deciding third sets on courts No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, when the match was called.
