Women’s Tennis Advances to National Championship with 4-1 Win Over Emory

Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA DIII National Championship after taking down Emory University 4-1 Wednesday at CMS.
 
The Sagehens will play for their first national championship since 1992 on Friday, May 23, against Washington University in St. Louis at 5:00 p.m. PT. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a 1-0 match lead after winning the doubles point. Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey earned a 6-3 win on top court before Lauren Rha and Leticia Bazua Vazquez also secured a 6-3 win on court three.
 
Zhou continued her dominance into singles, posting the Sagehens' first win at top court, 6-1, 6-4. Vazquez posted Pomona-Pitzer's second point in singles and third overall on court six, 6-3, 6-3, to put the team up 3-0. Emory won their first point on court three, as Nyakiriri Kanefu fell 6-3, 6-4. 
 
But Markey came back on court four to secure the match win for the Sagehens, falling in the first set 3-6 but winning the next two, 6-4, 6-1, to prompt the celebrations. Rha and Poor were both winning their respective matches in the third set when the match was called. 
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will compete for a national championship on Friday, May 23, at 5:00 p.m. PT at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at CMS.
