Baseball Defeats Occidental on Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball rolled to a 14-4 eight-inning win over Occidental Friday at Alumni Field on Senior Day.

Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 25-13 on the season, including 14-8 in SCIAC play.

Jack Gold posted a team-high four RBI to lead the Sagehens offensively, going 2-for-3 from the plate. Xavier Hattenburg had three RBI with a three-run homer while Cooper Berry and Jimmy Legg each tallied two RBI. Ethan Collins (5-0) earned the win from the bump with a season-high nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

Gold got Pomona-Pitzer on the board first with an RBI double in the opening frame. But the Tigers answered with three runs in the second, taking a 3-1 advantage. Gold earned another RBI with a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-2 Tigers after the second.

It was all Sagehens after that, though, with Pomona-Pitzer scoring six in the fourth to go up 8-3. Hattenburg blasted his three-run shot to right field to cap the six-run inning. Jimmy Legg posted a two-run double off the wall in right center in the sixth inning, then Lateef Wakil hit a sac fly to give the Sagehens a 12-3 lead.

Occidental got a run back in the seventh, but Berry hit a solo shot to center in the seventh and Gold hit another RBI single in the eighth to trigger the 10-run rule. Pomona-Pitzer ultimately won, 14-4.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to face the Tigers in a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. PT.
