CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team opened their NCAA Tournament with a big 23-10 win over Colorado College on Sunday afternoon at Merritt Field.
With the win, the Sagehens improved to 18-2 overall and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
The Sagehens were led by
Fiona Lewis who had a monster game with eight goals for her career-high. Lewis also moved into #2 all-time for career goals in Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse history.
River Buechner had four goals while
Taylor Glanville and
Shoshi Henderson also netted hat-tricks with three,
Sydney Landauer and
Caili Cross with two and
Caroline Welch with one.
The Sagehens and Tigers battled early in the first quarter with both teams putting up four goals. Henderson and Lewis got the scoring going early while Cross added a goal with seconds left in the first to the game at 4-4 heading into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer then exploded for seven goals in the second quarter to start to pull away from CC. Four-straight goals from. Glanville, Lewis, Welch and Landauer gave the Sagehens some breathing room while Buechner and Cross added goals at the end of the half to put the Sagehens up 11-8 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens' defense tightened in the third quarter, limiting Colorado College to a single goal. Meanwhile, Pomona-Pitzer's offense remained relentless, adding seven goals to their tally. Lewis continued her scoring spree, supported by Glanville and Henderson, extending the lead to 18–9 by the quarter's end.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to close out the Tigers 5-1 in the fourth with goals from Henderson, Lewis, Glanville, and Landauer as the Sagehens advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth consecutive year.
