CLAREMONT, Calif. — In its final two home games of the regular season, Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo defeated Biola 12-11 and Caltech 21-4 Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: The results improve the Sagehens' record to 19-10 on the season, including 11-0 in SCIAC play.
Sagehens 12, Biola 11
Pomona-Pitzer came from behind to defeat the Eagles in a dramatic finish that saw the Sagehens score the game's final three goals.
Paityn Richardson led the offense from the center position with a season-high five goals, while
Mia Amberger contributed three.
Brienz Lang had a game-high five assists and two goals.
The Sagehens scored the game's first two goals by way of Richardson and Amberger before Biola answered with two goals of its own to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the opening period. Teams traded scores in the second quarter, with another Richardson goal making it 5-4 Sagehens. The Eagles, though, scored three straight before another Richardson score made it 7-6 Biola at the half.
Lisbon Zeigler powered one into the back of the net early in the third before the Eagles posted another three straight goals, giving them a 10-7 advantage. Richardson proceeded to score back-to-back goals before a score from Biola's goalkeeper gave the Eagles an 11-9 lead heading into the final period.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the Eagles scoreless in the fourth quarter, with
Thea Pine making a key penalty shot save in the final minutes to keep Biola off the board. Amberger and
Kaylee Stigar traded scores to tie the game at 11-11 with 3:30 remaining. Lang broke the tie with a go-ahead score with 1:15 remaining, as the Sagehens held on for the 12-11 win.
Sagehens 21, Caltech 4
Pomona-Pitzer dominated from start to finish against the Beavers to maintain a perfect 11-0 record in conference play.
Ayva Magna led the team with five goals and an assist, while
Emma Jackson and
Natalie Sullivan Wu each tallied two goals and two assists.
The Sagehens scored the game's first seven goals, with a
Sara Archer score making it 7-0 early in the second quarter. The Beavers got on the board with a penalty goal before
Natalie Ascorra and Jackson traded scores, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 9-1 lead at the half.
Diana Hattar,
Ava Gurney and Jackson each scored early in the third to make it 12-1 Sagehens. Magna later scored four straight to make it 16-2. The Beavers scored a pair in the fourth, but
Harper Casey-Housand, Sullivan Wu,
Lauren Valentin and Gurney each scored in the closing minutes as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 21-4 victory.
