PASADENA, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team came through in the clutch on Saturday afternoon, defeating Caltech 4-3 in a tightly contested SCIAC match.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 8-7 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.
Caltech claimed the early edge by winning two out of three doubles matches. The Beavers took No. 1 in a 7-6 (12-10) tiebreaker and No. 3 in another close 7-5 battle. The Sagehens got their lone doubles win from Amelia Poor and Nyakiriri Kanefu at No. 2, who rolled to a 6-3 victory.
Despite trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Sagehens responded in singles play, picking up four wins to clinch the match. Angie Zhou dominated at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win, and Lauren Rha followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Marissa Markey added a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 to give the Sagehens a lead.
The match came down to No. 5 singles, where Poor delivered. After dropping the first set, she came from behind to win 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-0 decision, sealing the team victory for the Sagehens.
