Sagehens Fall To Chapman

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball dropped both games to Chapman Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens lost 7-0 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game in Orange.

Season Impact:  With the two losses, the Sagehens are 15-10 overall and 4-5 in SCIAC conference play.

Game 1:

Brooke Bullis led the offense for the Sagehens and was the only Sagehen to have a multi-hit game. Bullis went 2-for-3. Violet Burnham, Emily Hurtado, and Kylie Liu all notched one hit on the game. Nyla Springer picked up the loss (7-2) in the circle after pitching three innings, striking out four batters and allowing seven hits. Audrey Reimers came in to close out the game pitching three innings, striking out four and giving up three hits.

The score stayed 0-0 until Chapman broke through in the bottom of the second inning with a couple of hard hits and a sacrifice fly making the score 2-0 in favor of the Panthers. The Sagehens went down in order in the first inning and couldn't capitalize on limited opportunities throughout the game. Their best early chance came in the third when Bullis singled through the left side and Bella Carreon reached on an error, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Despite the error that advanced Bullis to third, the Sagehens were unable to capitalize and runners were left stranded. The score remained 2-0 with the Panthers on top until the bottom of the fourth when they tacked on three more runs. Springer gave up three hits in the fourth, causing a pitching change in which Reimers took her place in the circle. The score going into the bottom of the fifth was 5-0 but the Panthers put up two more runs in that inning. The Sagehen's final chance came in the seventh but once again, they couldn't deliver the timely hit. The final score was 7-0 in favor of the Panthers.

Game 2:

Kylie Liu and Summer Gibson were the only Sagehens to have a multi-hit game, both going  2-for-3. Liu notched two RBIs, hit a home run and a double, while Devin Waddell notched one RBI. Waddell  pitched all six innings and got the loss in the circle for the Sagehens, giving up six hits and striking out two batters.

The Sagehens wasted no time getting on the board, as Liu launched a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning to give the Sagehens an early 1-0 lead. Chapman responded in the bottom half with an RBI single to even the score at 1-1.

After a few quiet innings on both sides, Chapman took the lead in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run double to make it 3-1. The Sagehens battled back in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Carreon was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from Gibson to put two on. Liu delivered again with a ground-rule double to score Carreon, and Waddell followed with an infield RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.

Chapman regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth after a pair of passed balls and a Sagehen error helped bring in two unearned runs, putting the Panthers up 5-3. The Sagehens threatened again in the sixth after a walk and a stolen base, but couldn't push a run across. The Sagehens were held scoreless the rest of the way despite strong performances at the plate from Liu and Gibson .

Up Next:  The Sagehens will take on SCIAC opponent La Verne on the road on April 11th. First pitch is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. PT.
