LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated La Verne 5-1 on the road thanks to a Brooke Bullis Grand Slam in the first inning.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 16-10 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC conference play.
Brooke Bullis and Kylie Liu lead the offense for the Sagehens, both having multi-hit games. Bullis went 2-for-3 and hit a grand slam, her second home run of the season. Bullis also notched a career high five RBIs in a single game. Liu was also 2-for-3 and currently leads the Sagehens in batting average, hitting .449. Waddell pitched all seven innings for the Sagehens, giving up six hits while facing 25 batters.
The Sagehens came out swinging in the top of the first, putting pressure on the Leopards right away. After loading the bases with one out, Bullis delivered a massive swing with a two-out grand slam to left field, putting the Sagehens up 4-0 early.
After a couple of quiet innings from both teams, Violet Burnham sparked another scoring chance with a double to right field, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Bullis came through once again, this time with an RBI single up the middle to make it 5-0 Sagehens.
La Verne got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back miscues by the Sagehens allowed a run to score, cutting the lead to 5-1. However, the Sagehens defense tightened up from there, and the Leopards were unable to generate any more offense.
