Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series Over Lewis & Clark

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team split its doubleheader with Lewis & Clark Saturday but won the weekend series 2-1 over the Pioneers.

Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens' record at 16-10 on the season, including 6-6 in SCIAC play. The series win is Pomona-Pitzer's sixth of the year.

Sagehens 4, Lewis & Clark 3

Pomona-Pitzer came from behind to win game one Saturday by way of a Jack Gold walkoff double. Gold, Greg Pierantoni and JC Ng each posted one RBI on the game while Lateef Wakil went 2-4 from the plate and scored three runs. Wade Lawson was credited with the win from the mound after striking out four in 2.0 innings, while starting pitcher Ethan Collins struck out six in 5.0 innings of work.

Pierantoni put the Sagehens on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Wakil on an RBI groundout. The Pioneers, though, scored three in the third to go up 3-1. Pomona-Pitzer fought its way back within striking distance in the fifth, with Ng ripping an RBI triple to left field and cutting the team's deficit, 3-2.

The Sagehens found themselves down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-2, with Wakil at the plate and Mason Green on third. Wakil put a hard hit ball in play towards the Pioneers' second baseman, who couldn't quite handle it as Wakil reached first on an error and allowed Green to score.

Ng then walked, bringing Gold to the plate with two outs and two runners on. Facing a 1-2 count, Gold blasted a hit to the wall in right center field, scoring Wakil and securing the 4-3 walkoff win.

Sagehens 4, Lewis & Clark 5

Wakil again led the Sagehens on offense in game two with a pair of RBI after going 2-4 from the plate. Gold and Cooper Berry each launched solo homers to tally lone RBI of their own. Ben Cohen was credited with the loss despite striking out one and giving up no hits in 1.0 innings, as the Pioneers scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Lewis & Clark took a 2-0 lead in the fourth before a Berry homer to right field in the bottom of the frame brought the Sagehens within one, 2-1. Gold then posted a homer of his own in the fifth, tying the game at 2-2.

Wakil then launched Pomona-Pitzer's third homerun of the game in the sixth, as his two-run blast put the team up 4-2. Despite giving up a run in the eighth, the Sagehens still led 4-3 heading into the ninth. But a pair of wild pitches proved to be the difference, as the Pioneers scored two runs in the frame to go up 5-4. Pomona-Pitzer had a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't quite capitalize, ultimately falling 5-4.

Up Next: The Sagehens take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Sixth Street Rivalry next weekend, first taking on the Stags in Azusa on Friday, April 11, at 3:00 p.m. PT.
