Sagehens Sweep To Move On To SCIAC Finals, Will Face The Athenas

CLAREMONT, CA –The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team swept the Regals in the SCIAC semifinals on Wednesday to advance to the SCIAC finals.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 12-7 overall.

The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team earned a dominant 4-0 sweep over Cal Lutheran at home. The Sagehens took two out of three doubles matches to gain the early lead, then cruised through singles play to secure the win.

In doubles, Angie Zhou and Marissa Markey got things rolling at No. 1 with a 6-4 win. At No. 3, Meha Chaudhary and Annique Varty delivered a convincing 6-1 victory to clinch the doubles point. Despite a setback at No. 2 doubles, the Sagehens took the 1–0 lead heading into singles.

From there, the Sagehens dominated. Nyakiriri Kanefu rolled at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 result, and Marissa Markey followed at No. 3 with a clean 6-0, 6-1 win. Amelia Poor added another point at No. 4, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. After those wins, the Sagehens already clinched the game so the following matches were cut short. At No. 1 singles, Angie Zhou was in control throughout, winning 6-2, 3-2. Sofia Kalyva closed out her match at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-2, 5-3. Annique Varty at No. 6 singles was in a close 6-1, 3-6 match.

Up Next:  The Sagehens will advance to the SCIAC Finals against rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 4:00 pm at home.
