CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated SCIAC rival CMS 7-5 in a battle of the two top teams in Division III on Wednesday night at Axelrood Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 15-10 overall and 8-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Brienz Lang who netted a hat-trick with three goals in the win.
Lulu Gaither had two goals for the Sagehens while
Kaylee Stigar, and
Paityn Richardson had one.
Zosia Amberger earned the win in goal with 11 saves and an assist.
A low scoring first half between the Sagehens and Athenas in a battle to take the top seed in the SCIAC regular season. Lang got the scoring going off of a five-meter penalty to give the Sagehens. 1-0 lead through the first quarter while CMS outscored Pomona-Pitzer 2-1 in the second quarter to head into halftime tied at 2-2.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed on top in the third as Lang completed her hat-trick with two more goals to keep the game tied at 2-2 and Richardson got on the scoresheet at the end of the third to take a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.
CMS tied the game at 5-5 early in the fourth, but the Sagehens added two goals to end the game from Stigar and Gaither to give the Sagehens the win in the Sixth Street Rivalry and sole possession of first place in the SCIAC.
