CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball sealed a 2-1 series win over Cal Lutheran with a doubleheader sweep Sunday at home, defeating the Kingsmen 18-1 behind a
Jack Wiessinger no-hitter and 5-4 off a
JC Ng walk-off homerun.
Season Impact: The wins propel the Sagehens to 24-12 on the season, including 13-8 in SCIAC play. The series win is Pomona-Pitzer's ninth of the year.
Sagehens 18, Cal Lutheran 1
Wiessinger pitched Pomona-Pitzer's first no-hitter since 2015 in a dominant seven-inning 18-1 win in game two of the series. He fanned two batters while giving up just one run and two walks in 24 batters faced.
Tanner DeGrazia led the Sagehen bats with four RBI, while Ng and
Sammy Lee each had three.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated from the get-go, scoring four in each of the first two innings to go up 8-0.
Xavier Hattenburg, DeGrazia, Lee and
Jimmy Legg each posted RBI in the opening two frames.
Jack Gold then blasted a solo shot to right in the third to make it 9-0.
The Sagehens continued their dominance with a five-run fourth inning behind a three-run Ng homer. The Kingsmen got a run back in the fifth before a
Greg Pierantoni two-run double in the bottom of the frame made it 16-1. DeGrazia and
Ben Morgan each tallied an RBI in the sixth to then make it 18-1.
Wiessinger and the Pomona-Pitzer defense held strong throughout, with the sophomore ace striking out the final batter to give the Sagehens a commanding 18-1 victory and tying the series at 1-1.
Sagehens 5, Cal Lutheran 4
Ng proved to be the hero in the deciding game three of the series with a walk-off solo shot to center field in the bottom of the ninth. Ng, Wakil and Gold each had one RBI, while DeGrazia posted a pair.
Wade Lawson (3-0) earned the win from the mound after striking out two in 3.0 innings, while
Eamonn Woods went five hitless innings before giving up four runs in the sixth.
Pomona-Pitzer got off to another quick start, taking a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Gold posted a sac fly in the first before DeGrazia blasted a two-run double to left in the fourth. Wakil hit a sac fly of his own in the fourth to make it 4-0.
Cal Lutheran scored all four of its runs in the sixth inning, tying the game at 4-4. Neither team managed to score until the bottom of the ninth. With one out and nobody on, Ng smashed a ball in the zone to straight away center field, walking things off and giving Pomona-Pitzer the 5-4 win.
