CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer softball fell 4-1 before defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9-1 Sunday at home, ultimately dropping the series 2-1 to the Athenas.
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 21-13 on the season, including 10-8 in SCIAC play.
Sagehens 1, CMS 4
Devin Waddell led Pomona-Pitzer in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with two hits and an RBI on offense.
Nyla Springer (8-5) pitched a complete game but was credited with the loss from the mound.
The Athenas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a pair of RBI singles. Waddell put the Sagehens on the board in the sixth, doubling to right field and sending
Bella Carreon home. CMS added a run in the seventh to make it 4-1.
Emily Hurtado got on base in the final frame with two outs, but the Sagehens couldn't quite come back as the Athenas took game two of the series, 4-1.
Sagehens 9, CMS 1
Pomona-Pitzer run-ruled the Athenas in the third and final game of the series in five innings. Carreon sparked the Sagehen bats, going 3-for-3 from the plate with five RBI. Waddell pitched a one-hit game, fanning one and giving up just one hit and one run in 5.0 innings from the mound. She added a homerun on offense.
The Sagehens scored three in the bottom of the first, with Carreon blasting a two-run single to center after a bases-loaded walk scored
Kylie Liu.
Sophia Roberts then smashed an RBI single to left in the third, scoring
Marie Milton and making it 4-0 Sagehens.
CMS got a run back in the fourth before Carreon posted a three-run home run in the fifth, putting Pomona-Pitzer up 7-1. Waddell homered later in the frame before an error allowed Liu to score, triggering the run-rule win for the Sagehens, 9-1.
Up Next: The Sagehens close out the regular season with a three-game series next weekend against Occidental. Pomona-Pitzer will first host the Tigers on Friday, May 2, at Wig Beach Field.
