CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team earned their fourth consecutive SCIAC Tournament Championship with their 12-7 win over CMS on Saturday morning at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens earned both the Regular Season and Tournament Championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Division III National Championships.
The Sagehens were led by SCIAC Tournament MVP
Paityn Richardson who netted four goals in the win.
Kaylee Stigar and
Brienz Lang had two each while
Lisbon Zeigler,
Nikki Rubottom,
Chloe Mei Espinosa and
Sydney Bowns had one.
CMS started out with the first goal of the day before Richardson answered with her first to tie the game at 1-1 early in the first. The Athenas stayed on top with another goals but the Sagehens stayed with the Athenas with goals from Zeigler and Rubottom and then a goal from Espinosa to take a 4-3 lead into the second.
The Sagehens then started to build their lead with goals from Bowns, and Stigar to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
CMS got the deficit down to one goal at 7-6 but Richardson answered with a hat-trick to carry the Sagehens to a 10-6 lead early in the fourth. Stigar added another for the Sagehens with Lang adding another as well to take their biggest lead of the night at 12-6 late in the fourth. CMS scored the final goal of the game, but the Sagehens defended their title for the fourth-straight year to remain at the top of the SCIAC.
