Sagehens Advance To SCIAC Tournament Championship After Win Over Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Sagehen Water Polo team punched its ticket to the SCIAC Championship game with their 17-6 win over Cal Lutheran on Thursday night at Haldeman Pool.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens move to 22-10 overall, advance to the SCIAC Championship game and earned a spot in the Collegiate Water Polo National Championships.

The Sagehens were led by Paityn Richardson who netted four goals in the win. Ava Gurney, Mia Amberger, Gabby Lewis and Brienz Lang all had two while Sydney Bianchi, Natalie Sullivan Wu, Lisbon Zeigler, Layla Szymczak, and Sophia Berger had one.

The Sagehens dominated from start to finish against the Regals and shut them out for the first three quarters of the game.  The Sagehens outscored Cal Lutheran 6-0 in the first quarter alone after goals from Richardson, Amberger, Szymczak, Lang, and Lewis put this one away early heading into the second quarter.

The Sagehens continued their goal run to 10 before halftime with second quarter goals from Richardson, Amberger, Bianchi and Sullivan Wu to make it 10-0 at halftime.

The Sagehens took their largest lead of the night to start the fourth at 15-0 before Cal Lutheran found the back of the net.   The Regals ended up winning the fourth quarter after they outscored the Sagehens 6-4, but the Sagehens' huge first half run was enough to punch their ticket to defend their SCIAC Title.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host CMS in the SCIAC Championship on Saturday, April 26th at 11:00 a.m.
