CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball defeated Whittier College 6-4 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field, notching its sixth straight win.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 22-11 on the season, including 11-7 in SCIAC play.
Tuesday's contest was a makeup non-conference game, as the Sagehens saw matchups against Pacific Lutheran on Feb. 14 and Willamette on Mar. 7 canceled due to rain. The win over the Poets had no impact on either teams' SCIAC record.
Jimmy Legg and
JC Ng each tallied two RBI in the win, while
Lateef Wakil and
Andrew An each had one.
William Wallace earned the win from the mound after striking out three and giving up just two hits in 3.0 innings.
Wade Lawson was credited with the save after striking out the final batter in 0.1 innings of work.
The Sagehens jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first four innings, with Legg knocking a two-RBI single to left field to put Pomona-Pitzer on the board first in the second. Wakil hit an RBI single to center later in the frame.
An posted his RBI double to left field in the fourth inning, scoring
Tanner DeGrazia. Ng then hit a sac fly to center as Pomona-Pitzer took a 5-0 lead. Whittier got a run back in the fifth, before Ng hit another sac fly to center in the sixth to put the Sagehens back up 6-1.
The Poets scored a run in the eighth and two in the ninth off a two-run homer to left, bringing the score to 6-4. But with two outs in the top of the ninth, Lawson struck out the final batter to seal the 6-4 Sagehen victory.
Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will face Cal Lutheran in a three-game series this weekend. The Sagehens will first travel to Thousand Oaks to take on the Kingsmen on Friday, Apr. 25, at 3:00 p.m. PT.
