PASADENA, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team completed its three-game sweep over Caltech Saturday, winning 15-2 and 7-0 in games two and three.
Season Impact: The wins improve the Sagehens' record to 21-11 overall, including 11-7 in SCIAC play. The series win is Pomona-Pitzer's eighth of the season and its second sweep of the year.
Sagehens 15, Caltech 2
Jack Gold led the Sagehen bats with five RBI, going 2-3 from the plate with a three-run homer and a double.
Greg Pierantoni added three RBI while
Cooper Berry and
Sammy Lee added two.
JC Ng tallied a team-high three hits in four at-bats.
Ethan Collins earned the win from the mound with a season-high eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched, allowing just one earned run.
Ng got Pomona-Pitzer on the board first in the second with a sac fly, before a Berry homer in the third made it 2-0. Gold then blasted a two-RBI double before the Beavers got on the board in the fifth. Gold later launched a three-run homer to right in the seventh, as the Sagehens scored six unanswered runs to make it 10-1.
Pierantoni notched a two-RBI double down the left field line in the ninth. Berry and
Justin Zerger each recorded an RBI and Lee launched a solo shot to left, as Pomona-Pitzer sealed the 15-2 win.
Sagehens 7, Caltech 0
Eamonn Woods and the Sagehen defense held the Beavers scoreless in game three, with Woods fanning four batters and giving up just four hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Wade Lawson also fanned four batters in 2.0 innings of relief. Gold again led the Pomona-Pitzer offense with two RBI off three hits.
Pierantoni put the Sagehens on the board first in the top of the fourth, singling through the right side to score Ng. Berry and
Tanner DeGrazia each tallied an RBI in the frame to put Pomona-Pitzer up 3-0.
Berry posted another RBI in the fifth, before an error in the seventh allowed
Lateef Wakil to score. Gold then blasted a two-run shot to right in the ninth, with the Sagehens earning the shutout 7-0 victory.
