CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team won its three-game series with CMS, 2-1, after sweeping its Saturday doubleheader in thrilling fashion over the Stags at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: The wins propel the Sagehens to 18-11 on the season, including 8-7 in SCIAC play. The series win is Pomona-Pitzer's seventh of the season.
Sagehens 9, CMS 5
Lateef Wakil paced the Sagehen offense with a season-high four RBI, going 2-3 from the plate.
Greg Pierantoni had three RBI while
Jack Gold and
Tanner DeGrazia tallied one RBI apiece.
Ethan Collins earned the win from the mound with three strikeouts and just five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Trailing 1-0 in the second, DeGrazia blasted a ball through the left side to score
Cooper Berry and tie the game. Wakil then put the Sagehens in front with an RBI sac fly, before Gold sent DeGrazia home with an RBI single. Pierantoni then powered a deep three-run homer over the left field wall, putting Pomona-Pitzer up 6-1.
CMS got a run back in the third before Wakil posted a two-RBI single to center in the bottom of the frame. Then in the fifth, Wakil hit another RBI single to center field, giving the Sagehens a 9-2 lead. The Stags scored three runs in the final three innings but
Stephen Kwak closed the game on the mound with a pair of strikeouts, as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 9-5 win.
Sagehens 13, CMS 10
Pomona-Pitzer prevailed in a thrilling back-and-forth rubber game that saw two ties and four lead changes. DeGrazia and Berry led the Sagehens with three RBI apiece while Pierantoni and Wakil each had two.
William Wallace posted the win from the mound with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings, while
Eamonn Woods earned the save with a pair of strikeouts also in 2.0 innings.
The Stags jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after a five-run second inning. Berry started the Sagehen comeback with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame, before a two-run bomb from DeGrazia to left center made it 6-3. Berry then posted a two-RBI single in the third before DeGrazia mashed an RBI single through the right side, tying the game at 6-6.
CMS scored a run in the fourth to go back on top before
Jimmy Legg singled to center and sent DeGrazia home to tie things up, 7-7. The Sagehens took their first lead of the game in the fifth, 9-7, as
JC Ng drove Legg home on an RBI single and Wakil advanced home on an error. But the Stags answered again with a three-run homer in the seventh, taking a 10-9 advantage.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Pierantoni came through with a clutch two-RBI double to left field to put Pomona-Pitzer back on top, 11-10. Wakil then hit a two-RBI double of his own to left center in the eighth, giving the Sagehens some insurance at 13-10. Woods and the Sagehens defense closed the game with a one-two-three ninth inning, as Pomona-Pitzer held on to win 13-10, and take the series 2-1.
Up Next: The Sagehens will face Caltech in a three-game series next weekend, first taking on the Beavers on Friday, Apr. 18, at Alumni Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. PT.
