CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Lacrosse team stayed undefeated with their 12-11 overtime win over SCIAC rival CMS on Wednesday night at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens have now won their 12
th straight game against CMS and improved to 5-0 to start the year and 4-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Caili Cross who netted a hat-trick with three goals while
Fiona Lewis,
Shoshi Henderson, and
River Buechner had two. Also getting on the score sheet was
Sydney Landauer,
Grace Tighe and
Chloe Denhart who each had one in the win.
A cold rainy night at Merritt Field between the top two teams in the SCIAC got out to a slow start with the two teams alternating goals in the first quarter. Henderson and Lewis netted first-quarter goals but two from CMS as well kept the game tied at 2-2 heading into the second.
CMS jumped out to their first lead with back-to-back goals before the Sagehens came back to tie the game with goals from Tighe and Landauer to make it 4-4 with 6:43 left until halftime. The Athenas got two of the final three goals of the first half as Cross scored her first of the night with CMS holding a slight 6-5 lead at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer had a big third quarter and started with Cross earning her second off of a powerplay to tie the game at 6-6. CMS fired back with a goal and again after Lewis scored her second goal of the night to keep their one-goal lead over the Sagehens at 8-7. Pomona-Pitzer ended the third quarter with two goals from Henderson and cross to reclaim the lead at 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
CMS started to take control of the game with three of the first four goals of the fourth to put the Sagehens in a hole down 11-10 with 3:40 to play. The Sagehens had one final crack to try to send the game into overtime. With 18 seconds to play, Buechner got the game-tying goal to go as the Sagehens knotted the game up at 11-11 to send the Sixth Street Rivalry into a Golden Goal overtime.
After losing the draw, the Sagehens forced a turnover at the over then and Denhart ran the length of the field and earned a free position shot in front of goal. Denhart went on to convert the free position and earned the Sagehens their 12
th straight win over CMS to improve to 5-0 on the year.
