Sagehens Take Down Williams College And Occidental

CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis defeated Williams College with a score of 6-1 and Occidental with a score of 5-2 in a double header on Saturday at home. 

Season Impact: With the pair of victories, the Sagehens are 6-7 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

Match 1:

The Sagehens earned a strong 6-1 victory over Williams College, taking two of three doubles matches and dominating in singles play.  

In doubles, the Sagehens secured the point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Nyakiriri Kanefu and Amelia Poor won 6-4 at No. 2, while Meha Chaudhary and Lauren Rha won 7-6 at No. 3. Whitman claimed the No. 1 doubles match, as they topped Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou 6-4.  

The Sagehens controlled singles play, winning five of six matches. Lauren Rha set the tone at No. 1, winning 6-2, 6-3. Zhou followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 2, while Kanefu dominated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Markey continued the Sagehens' momentum with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Amelia Poor closed out the win with a 6-3, 6-4 result at No. 6.

Match 2:

The Sagehens women's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over Occidental on Saturday, fueled by strong singles play after dropping the doubles point.

The Sagehens got off to a mixed start in doubles, with Lauren Rha and Marissa Markey delivering a commanding 6-1 win at No. 1. However, Occidental bounced back to take the remaining two matches. Despite trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Sagehens dominated in singles, winning five of six matches. At No. 1, Angie Zhou cruised past Greta Nagy 6-1, 6-2, while Marissa Markey posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Amelia Poor added another dominant performance at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-3.

In a battle at No. 4, Meha Chaudhary secured a three-set victory winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-6. Meanwhile, Sophia Kalyva closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 6. Occidental's lone singles win came at No. 2, where Elina Shalaev edged Nyakiriri Kanefu in a 6-1, 4-6, 12-10.
