CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team took two games from St. Olaf College 7-0 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game at home.
Season Impact:Â With the sweep, the Sagehens are 15-5 overall and 4-2 in SCIAC conference play.
Game 1:
Kylie Liu, Devin Waddell, Morgan Groves, and Brooke Bullis led the offense for the Sagehens. Liu went 3-for-4 with one home run and one RBI, Waddell went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs, Groves went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Bullis went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Waddell picked up the win (7-4) in the circle only allowing two hits, pitching all seven innings.
The Sagehens set the tone early, with Waddell crushing a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Sagehens an early lead. The Oles had opportunities to respond, but the Sagehen's pitching and defense held firm, stranding multiple runners in the second and third innings. Â
In the third, Bullis delivered an RBI single, and Groves followed with a run-scoring double, extending the Sagehens' lead to 4-0. St. Olaf struggled to generate offense, managing only two hits through the first six innings. Meanwhile, the Sagehens kept the pressure on, adding another run in the fifth on Groves' RBI single. The game was put out of reach in the sixth, when Waddell launched her second home run of the game, immediately followed by a solo shot from Liu, pushing the score to 7-0. The Oles had no responses and the Sagehens won 7-0 in dominant fashion.Â
Game 2:
Jiselle Nguyen, Violet Burnham, and Morgan Groves led the offense for the Sagehens. Nguyen was 2-for-4 with one RBI, Burnham was 2-for3, and Groves was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kylie Liu hit another home run and Nyla Springer pitched all seven innings for the Sagehens, picking up the victory (7-0).
After a slow start in the first couple of innings, the Oles struck first in the top of the third inning giving St. Olaf a 1-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the fourth making it 2-0. The Sagehens responded immediately in the bottom half of the fourth, with Liu launching a solo home run to put the Sagehens on the board. Immediately after, Emily Hurtado singled to left field then Burnham doubled to center field to put runners on second and third. Summer Gibson singled to third base making the bases loaded. This set the stage for Groves who drove in two runs on a single to right field, flipping the score to 3-2 in favor of the Sagehens. The score remained 3-2, Sagehens leading until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Sagehens added a couple of insurance runs after a costly St. Olaf's error extended the inning. Sophia Roberts and Nguyen each delivered RBI singles, pushing the lead to 5-2. Nyla Springer notched three strikeouts and remains undefeated when on the mound (7-0).Â
