Sagehens Fall To Williams College

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team came short in both games against Williams College Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens lost 0-3 in the first game and 3-7 in the second game at home.

Season Impact: With the two losses, the Sagehens are 15-7 overall and 4-2 in SCIAC conference play.

Game 1:

Devin Waddell had the only hit of the game for the Sagehens and went 1-for-3. Bella Carreon and Waddell both notched a stolen base. Waddell picked up the loss (7-6) in the circle after pitching all seven innings, striking out three batters and allowing five hits.

The Ephs took the lead in the first inning when they scored on a wild pitch. An error by the Sagehens allowed another run to cross the plate for a 2-0 advantage. Williams tacked on an insurance run in the fourth while the Sagehens struggled to generate offense, managing just one hit against Williams' pitching. Despite Waddell's single to left field and stolen base in the sixth, the Sagehens couldn't capitalize with runners on base. Defensively, Williams was solid, turning a key double play in the fifth to erase a potential Sagehen rally. The Ephs won the game and shut the Sagehens out 3-0.

Game 2:

Devin Waddell was the only Sagehen to have a multi-hit game going 2-for-4, hitting two home runs with three RBIs while Jiselle Nguyen, Kylie Liu, and Summer Gibson both notched one hit in the game. Nyla Springer (7-1) pitched 4.1 innings and got the loss in the circle for the Sagehens, giving up six hits and striking out three batters. Mia Lopez came in to relief pitch and went 2.2 innings giving up two hits and striking out two batters.

The Ephs struck early and crushed a three-run homer in the first inning, giving them a 3-0 lead. The Sagehens answered in the bottom half with a solo shot from Waddell, but that was as close as the Sagehens would get. In the fifth inning, Williams' tacked on more insurance runs and extended their lead with a two-run homer, making it 5-1. It didn't stop there for the Ephs as they launched another two-run blast, to push the lead to 7-1. The Sagehens showed a late fight in the seventh, when Gibson singled and Waddell homered for her second time, bringing in two runs, but the comeback fell short. The Sagehens were held to just five hits in the game.

Up Next:  The Sagehens will take on SCIAC opponent Chapman at home on Friday (4/4). First pitch is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. PT.
