Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Sagehens Drop Close Match With Brown; Beat Occidental In Wednesday Doubleheader

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split in their Wednesday doubleheader with a close 11-10 loss to Brown and 14-4 win over SCIAC opponent Occidental at Haldeman Pool.
 
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 13-10 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Mia Amberger who had a team-high five goals in the loss. Layla Szymczak had a multi-goal game with two while Sydney Bianchi, Brienz Lang, and Lulu Gaither had one.
 
Brown started with a 3-0 lead before Lang and Szymczak got on the board for the Sagehens to make it 3-2. Bown ended the first with a goal and opened the second with a goal to extend their lead to 5-2.  Amberger and Syzmczak sprung a 3-0 run to tie the game at 5-5 while Bianchi netted the fourth in a row to give the Sagehens their first lead of the game at 6-5.  After taking the lead, the Sagehens let one more goal in at the buzzer with Brown scoring the final goal of the half to tie the game at 6-6 heading into halftime.
 
Brown and Pomona-Pitzer alternated goals to start the third, but the Bears ended the third with the final two goals to take a 9-7 lead into the fourth.  
 
Brown extended its lead to 11-7 with 3:41 left in the game, but the Sagehens made a huge comeback late in the game with goals from Amberger and Gaither to make it a one goal game at 11-10.   Pomona-Pitzer had a final shot to tie the game, but it was blocked as Brown held on for the win.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 14, Occidental 4
 
The Sagehens had four players with two goals from Lisbon Zeigler, Ayva Magna, Paityn Richardson, and Sydney Bowns while Natalie Sullivan Wu, Kaylee Stigar, Lang, Gabby Lewis, Diana Hatter, and Nikki Rubottom had one.
 
Richardson and Stigar got the Sagehens out to a 2-0 lead before Occidental scored their first goal of the game to make it 2-1. Bowns, Magna and Lewis put the Sagehens up 5-1 to end the first quarter and then outscored the Tigers 6-1 In the second to take an 11-2 lead into halftime.
 
Pomona-Pitzer slowed down on offense in the second half but still managed to outscore Occidental 3-2 in the third to take their sixth SCIAC win of the season.
