CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball fell to La Verne in game two, 6-3, and game three, 7-2, Saturday in the final two outings of its three-game series with the Leopards.
Season Impact: The results drop the Sagehens to 12-8 on the season, including 4-5 in SCIAC play.
Sagehens 3, La Verne 6
Six different Sagehens registered a hit in game two of the series, with
Greg Pierantoni posting two with an RBI.
Jack Wiessinger was credited with the loss despite going 5.1 innings with two strikeouts and four earned runs.
Pomona-Pitzer gained control early, with Will Kinney scoring from third in the third on a close play at the plate after
Lateef Wakil hit a sac fly to shallow left field.
Carson Evans added a run in the fourth, scoring from second after
JC Ng reached on an error. The Sagehens added one more in the fifth, with Pierantoni launching a solo shot to right center field.
The Leopards, though, responded in the top of the sixth with a four spot to take a 4-3 lead. Pomona-Pitzer couldn't quite answer back, leaving one on base in the sixth and two in the seventh. La Verne tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, going up 6-3 and eventually holding on for the win.
Sagehens 2, La Verne 7
La Verne took control in the top of the second, scoring two on a pair of hits to take a 2-0 lead. The Leopards added two more in the third and one in the fourth to go up 5-0. One more run in each the fifth and sixth innings gave La Verne a 7-0 advantage. The Sagehens got on the board in the seventh inning, with
Tanner DeGrazia singling up the middle to send Pierantoni home from second.
Pomona-Pitzer added a run in the eighth, with Ng scoring after
Andrew An reached on an error. But the Sagehens left three on base in the inning and two in the ninth as La Verne came away with the 7-2 win.
Max Brunngraber was credited with the loss despite going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Whittier College in a three-game series next weekend, first taking on the Poets at Alumni Field on Friday, Mar. 28, at 3:00 p.m. PT.
