Pomona-Pitzer Splits Day One Of UM Invitational


ANN ARBOR, MI. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split day one of the UM Invitational with a 12-8 loss to No. 21 Marist and 19-8 win over Salem University on Saturday afternoon at Canham Natatorium.
 
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 11-7 overall.

The Sagehens were led by Mia Amberger who netted half of the goals for the Sagehens with four in the loss.  Sydney Bianchi, Lisbon Zeigler, Brienz Lang, and Sydney Bowns also got on the scoresheet with one goal each.
 
Marist jumped ahead in the first with the opening goal of the game before the Sagehens came back with goals from Amberger and Zeigler to take a 2-1 lead. Marist came back with the final goal of the quarter with the teams tied at 2-2 heading into the second.
 
Amberger got the Sagehens back on top with a goal to open the second, but Marist went on a big scoring run with five-straight goals to take a 7-3 lead heading into halftime.
 
Amberger got the Sagehens one more in the third, but Marist also answered with one as the Sagehens trailed 8-4 heading into the fourth.
 
Each team netted four goals in the fourth as Amberger, Bowns, Lang and Bianchi all scored in the final quarter, but Marist was able to match the Sagehens and come away with the win.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 19, Salem 8
 
The Sagehens were led by Ayva Magna and Paityn Richardson who each netted a hat-trick with three goals in the win. Bianchi, Bella McGowan, Layla Szymczak, Lulu Gaither, and Sydney Bowns had two while Kaylee Stigar, Brienz Lang, and Amberger had one.
 
Salem got the opening goal of the game, but the Sagehens ended the first with three unanswered goals from Amberger, Gaither and Bowns to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
 
Richardson netted a hat-trick by herself in the second while goals from Lang, Bowns and Szymczak gave the Sagehens a 9-3 lead heading into halftime.
 
After scoring six goals in the second, the Sagehens had their best scoring quarter of the game with seven goals in the third. Gaither, Magna and Stigar got the scoring going in the second half while Bianchi, ended the quarter with two goals to extend the lead to 16-4 heading into the fourth.
 
McGowan and Szymczak got on the scoresheet in the fourth as the Sagehens split in their opening day at the UM Invitational.
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will next face off against Mercyhurst and Michigan tomorrow at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
