Baseball Secures Series Win Over Tufts University

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team secured a 2-1 series win over Tufts University with a 10-5 victory in the deciding game three Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' record to 12-5 on the season, including 4-2 in SCIAC play.

Jack Gold posted a team-best two hits, including a two-run shot, while Xavier Hattenburg had a game-high four RBIs with a grand slam in the first. JC Ng also homered and Cooper Berry notched a double in the win. Max Brunngraber earned the win on the mound after going 6.0 innings with three strikeouts.

The Sagehens jumped to an early 1-0 advantage after a Ng leadoff bomb to right field. Later in the inning, Hattenburg blasted a grand slam to right with Gold, Berry and Lateef Wakil on base to give Pomona-Pitzer a 5-0 lead. Gold launched a two-run homer of his own to right in the second, putting the Sagehens up 7-0.

The Jumbos responded with a four-run fifth inning to cut their deficit, 7-4. But Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead in the bottom of the frame, as Berry scored on an error and Greg Pierantoni scored on a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-4. Ng scored on another bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Tufts got one run back in the seventh, but Wade Lawson and Justin Zerger held strong from the mound in relief as the Sagehens came away with the 10-5 win.

Up Next: Pomona-Pitzer will take on La Verne in a three-game series next weekend. The Sagehens will first travel to La Verne for game one of the series on Friday, Mar. 21, at 3:00 p.m. PT.
